Journey from discovering I have primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) to needing a liver transplant.

I was diagnosed with a rare liver disease, called primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) which will worsen over time. My best chance of survival will be if we can find someone who can donate a portion of their liver to save my life (a living liver donor).

Simply stated, a living-donor liver transplant is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the liver from a healthy person is placed into someone whose liver is no longer working properly. The donor’s remaining liver will re-grow and return to its normal size and capacity shortly after the surgery and the transplanted portion will grow and restore normal function in the recipient.

I am receiving care at NYU Langone Health.  There is a special group of living donor experts who will conduct the medical testing at NYU to make sure that the donation will be safe.  After surgery and recovery, it is expected that donors will lead normal lives with no long-term medical care required.  Medical costs of the tests associated with the donor evaluation, surgery and recovery will be covered – there will zero medical costs for the donor. Resources are available to off-set logistical costs associated with donating such as lost wages, travel costs and dependent care.

See below some basic qualifications for being a potential donor:

  • Willing and able to undergo evaluation at NYU – can start out-of-state
  • Under the age of 60 years old
  • All donors sent for blood type confirmation – donors who are not blood type compatible may be able to assist through living donor paired exchange (swap)

If you or someone you know is willing to help or would like additional information to help spread the word on liver donation, please reach out directly to the NYU living donor team.  They can answer any questions. The phone number is:  212-263-8133 option 4 and their email is LivingLiverDonorTeam@nyulangone.org .

All potential donors must submit questionnaire found at this website: https://redcap.link/nyuliverdonor

Any contact you make with the donor team at NYU is strictly confidential.

Please share this information with others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
